The founders — entrepreneurs, engineers and policy experts — recognised that India stood at a defining crossroads. With over 360 billion tonnes of coal reserves, the world’s second-largest coal consumer could either continue burning coal in traditional, emission-heavy ways or pioneer a cleaner path: one that unlocks the chemical potential of coal while capturing and sequestering its carbon footprint.
New Era chose the latter. From inception, the company committed its entire focus to this mission — securing land, government designations, environmental clearances, coal mine allocations and technology partnerships needed to bring a first-of-its-kind complex to life in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra.
Today, New Era holds the distinction of being India’s largest private-sector recipient of the Ministry of Coal’s Financial Incentive Grant for coal gasification, a recognition that validates both the project’s national importance and the credibility of its execution team.
To be the commercial embodiment of India's National Coal Gasification Mission — demonstrating that clean energy, industrial productivity and decarbonisation can coexist at scale.
To convert India's coal resources into high-value chemicals through advanced gasification technology, while capturing and utilising the associated CO₂ emissions, thereby contributing to energy security, import substitution and India's climate commitments.
India faces three simultaneous energy imperatives that appear at odds with one another:
securing reliable, domestic energy and chemical feedstock to power an economy growing at over 7% per year
keeping energy and industrial inputs accessible for industry and consumers alike
meeting India's Paris Agreement commitments and driving decarbonisation across hard-to-abate sectors
Coal gasification with CCUS is the only industrial technology available today that addresses all three simultaneously. It transforms an abundant domestic resource into clean syngas, which in turn produces chemicals India currently imports — all while capturing the CO₂ that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.
